If you like big water and a lakeside experience, then Ausable Point may be the place for you! There is a great selection of sites right next to Lake Champlain with great views looking across the lake to the Green Mountains of Vermont. Some of these sites are on or close to one of the beach areas. There are also quite a few sites located right on the shores of the Ausable for those who are more into a paddling experience.
Satellite Close Up of Ausable Point Campground
Check out a closeup satellite image. You'll get a good sense for how the campground is situation on the shore of Lake Champlain, as well as the orientation of the campsites. Thats quite the beach! You can
check out the satellite view in more detail. Be sure to zoom in!.
Site 15 is one of the best sites right on Lake Champlain
For a great lakeside experience right on the shores of Lake Champlain, choose site 8, 9, 10, 11, 13, 15, 16, 19, 20, or 21. These are all large sites and accommodate larger rigs and are pretty much perfectly level. Remember however that Lake Champlain can get pretty windy so you might be tying down your canopies and awnings or taking them down altogether depending on the weather.
Site 12 is right across the road with lake view
If you can't get a site right on the lake, then consider one of the sites across the road which are also very large and level and most offer some view of the lake. Sites include 5, 6, 7, 12, 14, 17, 18, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26 or 27.
Site 33 has great access to the windsurfing beach
If you want to be right on the lake and by the windsurfing beach, then choose a site down the road on the beach side. Consider site 28, 30, 31, 33, 34, 35, 36, 37, 38, 29, 40, 42, 44, 45 or 47. This is a popular area as well for those who enjoy a large sandy beach. Sites across the road are not on the water but offer easy access to the beach area. This include sites 29, 32, 41, 43 and 46.
Site 93 is perfect for the paddler!
If you are more into paddling, or wish to have a bit more protection from any potential wind, then I'd suggest a site along the shore of the Ausable River as it follows towards Lake Champlain. Choose site 82, 83, 84, 85, 86, 87, 89, 91, 92, 93, 96, 98, or 99. 101 is a bit farther back from the water but should suffice as well if you want water access right from your site.
The off water sites in the 84-123 loop are a mix of small sites backing onto marshy water and larger sites with decent privacy. Sites I would least recommend include sites 94, 95, and 97.
Site 62 is not on the water but is very spacious
Sites in the 40-80 range are quite level and spacious as well. Many offer decent privacy, however they are off water. Several back on to some marshy areas connected to Dead Creek. Site 76 does back on with access to Dead Creek, but its not swimmable and not sure it would be much to paddle.
Site 6 is the closest site to the main beach and swimming
If you are looking to be as close to possible to the main beach and swimming, then choose sites in the site 1-14 area. Site 4 and 6 offer the closest proximity to the beach which is right behind them.
Ausable Point is quite popular with campers in the Plattsburg area as well as Montreal. All the watersites book up quickly 9 months in advance for the summer months so be sure to book well in advance! Loop 1 (sites 1-24) and Loop 2 (site 25-48) will completely book up. Only the watersites in Loop 3 (81-123) will book up well in advanced. The off watersites in Loop 3 and all sites in Loop 4 (49-80) are not so popular and will be easier to get.
