About the Whiteface Lodge
History
The Whiteface Lodge was built by local Lake Placid builder and developer, Joe Barile, a former Olympian who competed for 6 years internationally in luge in the 1980's. His career highlight was the 1988 Olympics in Calgary. In 2005 Joe built The Whiteface Lodge as a classic camp with the rustic opulence of the Adirondack Great Camps of the early 1900's. His vision was to build an anthentic version of the old camps that would be specifically enjoyed by families. Much of the fine Adirondack style construction seen in, and around Lake Placid was built by Joe. Joe later sold the Whiteface Lodge in February 2007 for $62 million. The lodge has changed owners several times over the years. The Whiteface Lodge was built to eventually become a members only resort. It is known in the industry as a 'fractional timeshare resort'. At this point in time, approximately half of the shares of suites are owned by the resort, and half are owned by individual members who purchased 'fractions'. Owners in the early days purchased 1/6 share of one or more particular suites (8 weeks a year). In recent years the resort has been selling the balance of suites as 1/12 share (ie 4 weeks a year). The Lodge originally consisted of 85 suites in the main building, subsequently followed by an additional 9 suites in the Lodge's Clubhouse / pavillion. |
The Lodge TodayOver the years the popularity of the Whiteface Lodge has grown significantly! As Lake Placid's top resort for families, vacationers from across the Eastern US and around the world have become loyal clientele. The lodge is typical full or near full capacity most weekends of the year and has received awards and accolades over the years from the likes of Conde Nast, the Robb Report, Travel+Leisure, The Wine Spectator Magazine, and many more. Vacationers on Trip Advisor have ranked The Whiteface Lodge #2 in Lake Placid (#1 is the adult only Lake Placid Lodge, just down the road). The Whiteface Lodge has also become a favorite option for those planning weddings. |
